A Massive Side Table (Foundation Log), Norway c. 17th-18th Century
A sculptural mushroom-form log, originally used as a foundation support (“stabbestokk”) beneath a Norwegian stabbur, the raised storehouse traditionally elevated on such supports to protect its contents from rodents and damp. The broad, flared cap sits above a tapering base, with deep natural splitting and a richly weathered, silvered surface built up over centuries of outdoor use. Now repurposed as a striking sculptural side table. Good antique condition, structurally sound, with significant weathering, splitting, and surface loss consistent with age and use.
