A Brutalist Tripod Chair, France, c. 1960s

A chair in solid oak. A round seat rests on three legs that cross beneath it, one rising through to carry a shield shaped backrest. The backrest is built from joined boards and gently concave, fixed to the post with a through tenon and wedge. The construction is left visible throughout: a steel bracket under the seat, a square headed bolt where the legs meet, tool marks along the frame. The oak has darkened to a deep brown with a warm patina.
